2016 2nd Quarter Newsletter

We continue to praise God and to thank Him for all He is doing here in Jaco!  We are so thankful for you who pray for us and support us–you are a vital part of our team as we serve here!  We have had a busy Quarter, and God continues to show Himself faithful in our family and in ministry.  Our three boys are almost half way done with the school year and the older two are serving regularly with the Worship Team;  Cecilia finished her first trimester of college and is working at a local coffee shop;  Manuel is doing great in school and is working as a guard at the church; and Madelyn is now walking so she is all over the house and into everything.  God is good!  We had the joy of having Chris Henry, a young man from our former Youth Group in The States, come and intern with us for 2 1/2 months.  He was such a blessing to have, and he worked so hard doing construction for the Ocean’s Edge Ministry, working with the youth at CasaFe and serving anywhere he was needed.  My boys were sad to see him go as he became a “big brother” to them.

Mission Teams
We are always so thankful for the Mission Teams that come and serve with us throughout the year!  We had a college team from Columbia International University, a team from Florida and a team from Tennessee come and serve this Quarter.  They served in local schools, kids clubs, Youth Group, construction, evangelism, prayer walks, feeding the homeless and more.  One of our teams brought “snow” that was made by adding water to a “snow substance” that they brought with them.  They used it as an activity in the local schools and at Kids Club, and we have never seen these children so excited!  Of course they have never seen snow before and who would have thought that they would ever see snow???  Sometimes it’s the littlest things in life that bring so much joy!!  A BIG thanks to these teams for serving with us!!!

Prayer Walking

As a church, we continue to follow Paul’s words in Acts 6:4 “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.”  Our hearts are to be faithful to teach the Word and to Pray.  In March, we had a World Race team serving with us and we organized a Prayer Walk with our Women’s Ministry to bathe Jaco in prayer.  It was amazing to hear stories of hearts that were touched as many women prayed with business and restaurant owners all over town. God keeps showing us that the “prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective.”  James 5:16  God is reaching the “unreachable” and we know that prayer is one of the powerful tools we have to fight the darkness here.  Please continue to pray with us for our church and for our town–God is moving!!
Preparing to break into groups and pray all over Jaco–so amazing!!!

Men’s Work Project

The men of Horizon Church meet once a month for breakfast, fellowship, teaching and prayer.  The neighbor of one of our church members had a great need, and the men decided to meet that need.  This older lady’s (pictured below) floor was all dirt and when it rained there was a river running through her house.  In addition, the living conditions with a dirt floor were bad for her health.  With rainy season now beginning, the need was urgent.  So, the men shared a meal together and laid a concrete floor down for this precious lady.  What a blessing it was to her and for the men!  Here are a few pictures from the day….

Women’s Conference

In May, we hosted a Women’s Conference for our church and for other women in the community.  It was a huge success!!!  We had a Speaker and Worship Leader come from The States to minister to us, and we had a powerful, life changing weekend!  We had 3 girls give their lives to Jesus, and many others who were set free from strongholds and struggles that weigh us down.  It was an amazing weekend with an amazing group of girls!  What a gift to be able to serve these precious women on a weekly basis!  My heart is so full!

Worship through art–a sweet time on Saturday evening

Centro Prenatal Conference
As a church, we have the privilege to minister to many pregnant women through the ministry of our Prenatal Centers.  I (Sarah) counsel at the Center on Wednesdays, and it is such a joy to serve these precious women and walk through their pregnancies with them.  In May, we helped to host a conference both for the volunteers and the clients of all 7 Prenatal Centers in Costa Rica.  A Mission Team from New Orleans came and led the 2-day conference along with the Local Directors who attend our church.   It was such a sweet time of fellowship and growth for all.  At the end of the day, the ladies on the Mission Team took time to wash each volunteer’s feet and to pray over them.  It was an incredible time of ministry as women wept and wept.  So many of these women are suffering in so many ways and to be served in this way was overwhelming to them.  The presence of God met each girl where she was and ministered to her….it was an unforgettable time of ministry.

THANK YOU!!!

Thanks to each of you for your continuous prayer and financial support!  We could not be here ministering in Jaco if it were not for youas the other half of our team!  We are so blessed by the way the Lord continues to meet our every need on a monthly basis.  Please continue to pray for the following:  Horizon Church as we continue to grow and make disciples;  our Horizon Church ministry team as we search for a Worship Leader;  protection for us and our children;  Jaco and the lost;  intentional discipleship with those who are new to the faith;  CasaFe’;  that we would be faithful to prayer and the ministry of the Word and for wisdom and discernment as we listen and follow the Lord’s leading in all things.  We love you!
Blessings,  Daniel, Sarah, Thomas, Jacob and Micah Barrett
