WHAT WE BELIEVE

Mission: to equip all people to know God, love God, and serve God.

To Know

To Know God, we prioritize engaging with God's Word through Bible study and growing as disciples of Jesus, fostering intimacy with God through prayer, trust, obedience, and embracing our new identity in Christ.

(John  1
7:3, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, John 15:7, John 10:14-15).

To Love

To Love God, we build strong community through relational discipleship, with worship and godly living as a central expression of our devotion. We strive to love and obey God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

(Romans 12:1, John 14:15, Mark 12:30)

To Serve

To Serve God, we encourage local outreach and generosity, equip followers of Jesus to use their spiritual gifts in ministry, and empower them to share their faith through evangelism.

(Acts 2:42-47, Matthew 28:18-20, Eph. 2:10, Matthew 10:28, Col. 3:17).

Horizon Church Jaco

What we believe

At Horizon Church Jaco, we believe that Jesus is God.  Because of that, everything we do is simply about Jesus.  "Simply Jesus" is a mentality that can guide us through so many of life's questions.  Our congregation is diverse and even though there are many philosophies and theories of how things should be done, Jesus should always be what we are all about.  In Jesus, there is power, freedom, reconciliation, and salvation.  Jesus should always be not only the center of our lives, but the center of the Church.

About the Bible

Our creed is the Bible, the sole basis of our belief, composed of sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God and that each human author was moved by the Spirit of God to write the very words of Scripture. The Bible is the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God and is relevant and applicable to humanity past, present, and future. Therefore, we place great emphasis upon teaching it in public, studying it in private, and using it as a guide for our daily lives. It is the unique, full, and final authority on matters of faith and practice, and there are no other additional writings similarly inspired by God.

(Mark 13:31; John 8:31-32; 20:31; Acts 20:32, 2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

About God

We believe in one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is the second member of the Trinity (the Son of God) who became flesh to reveal God to man and to become the Savior of the world. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in his sinless life, in his miracles, in His atoning death through his shed blood, in the bodily resurrection, in his ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in his personal return in power and glory. (Matt. 1:23; John 1:1-3, 15:26; Acts 1:11; Col 1:15-20; Rom. 5:6-8, 8:34; 1 Cor 15:3-42; 2 Cor. 5:21; Eph. 1:4, Phil 2:5-11)

About Man
We believe that all people were created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him but became separated in that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, people are incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through their own efforts. We believe that human life is sacred from conception to its natural end; and that we must have concern for the physical and spiritual needs of all humanity. God created mankind male and female. These two distinct, but complementary sexes, reflect the image and likeness of God.

(Gen.1:26-28; Jer. 17:9; Rom. 3:23-24; John 1:13, 5:24; 2 Cor. 5:17)

About Salvation

We believe that the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sins. Therefore, God offers salvation to those who place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin. We believe that for salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential. We believe there will be a coming judgment that will determine the fate of each individual. Believers will be received into eternal communion with God in Heaven. Unbelievers will be separated from God by condemnation in Hell. God’s judgment will reveal His justice in consigning them to eternal retribution as a result of their own rejection of God.

(Eph. 2:8-9; John 3:16, 5:24; Psalm 51:7; Rom. 3:19; 5:19; I John 1:9; 2 Thess. 1:8-9; Romans 2:5-8, 6:23’ Hebrews 9:27; Revelation 21).

About the Christian Life
We believe all Christians should live for Christ and not for themselves. By
obedience to the Word of God and daily yielding to the Spirit of God, every believer should mature and be conformed to the image of Christ. Christian service is part of the Christian life and is the responsibility of all believers. Our goal is to develop the ministry of every believer to the benefit

of all.

(Eph. 4:11-13; 2 Peter 1:3-8; John 14:15,23-24; Gal. 5:22-26; Colossians 1:9-10; Rom. 12:1-3; 1 Cor. 4:2; 10:31; 2 Cor. 9:6-9; Heb. 12:1-2; 1

John 2:3-6)

About Spiritual Gifts
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercising of Spiritual
Gifts according to the instructions given to us in the Bible. These gifts are given to build up the body of Christ, glorify God, and serve others in love

and humility.
(1 Cor. 12-14; Eph 4:2-12; Rom 12:4-8)

About the Church
We believe that Jesus Christ is the head of God’s Church. God’s Church, also known as
the body of Christ, consists of those who have been trusted by faith in Christ. There is one true universal Church composed of all those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Scripture commands believers to gather together to devote themselves to worship, prayer, teaching the Word, observance of baptism and the Lord’s supper, fellowship, service to His Church, and outreach to the world. Whenever God’s people meet regularly in obedience to His command, there is a local expression of the Church. Its Members (Partners) are to work together in love and unity, intent on the ultimate purpose of glorifying God.

(Matthew 16:17-19; Colossians 1:24; Eph 2:19-22; Acts 1:8, 2:42; Heb 10:23-25)

About Marriage and Sexuality

We believe in the historical Christian perspective on marriage and sexuality, affirming that marriage constitutes a sacred lifelong covenant union between one man and one woman. We hold that sexual intimacy is reserved exclusively for this covenant relationship, viewing any sexual relationships and expressions outside of marriage as sin.
(Gen. 1:26-28, Gen. 2:24, Eph. 5:22-23, Heb. 13:4, Mark 10:6-9.)

About Baptism
Baptism symbolizes the believer’s new identification with the death, burial, and resurrection
of Jesus Christ, as illustrated in Rom. 6:3-5. This act serves as a visible representation of the believer’s spiritual union with Christ, signifying the forgiveness of sin, participation in His redemptive work, and the transformative power of His resurrection life through the Holy Spirit. While baptism is a powerful and meaningful expression of faith, it does not in itself produce salvation. Salvation is entirely dependent on the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ alone, as articulated in Eph. 2:8-9. Baptism, therefore, serves as an outward declaration of an inward reality – a public proclamation of one’s faith in Christ and commitment to His Lordship. We practice what is known as believers baptism through immersion in water. Baptism is reserved for those who are able to make a conscious decision to repent of their sins and trust Jesus and their Lord and

Savior. Candidates for baptism shall be approved by a Horizon Church Pastor or Elder. We practice baby dedications as a way for parents to publicly commit to raising their children in the nurture and instruction of the Lord.
(Ephesians 6:4,1 Samuel 1:27-28).

About Communion
Communion(The Lord’s Supper) commemorates the body and blood of Christ in
remembrance of His atoning sacrifice. It is open to all believers who have professed faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, fostering spiritual unity and nourishment within the body of Christ.
(Mat. 26:26-28; 1 Cor.
10:16-17).
